Traveling with your mom as an adult is one of the most beautiful gifts you can give each other. Here are ten mother daughter trip ideas for adult daughters, from a quiet Greek island to a cooking week in Italy.
I lead a mother daughter retreat in Greece with my own mom, Athena. We have traveled together since I was small. These are the trips I recommend to friends, with a note on who each one suits.
How to choose the right mother daughter trip
Answer three questions together before you pick a place.
How much do you want to plan? Some pairs love building an itinerary. Others love having every detail handled so they can simply be together.
What pace feels good to you both? The trips you remember most usually have room in the days. A slow lunch. A swim. A long talk on a balcony.
Just the two of you, or a small group? Some pairs want it to be only them. Others love sharing dinners and stories with other mothers and daughters.
1. A mother daughter retreat on a Greek island
This one is ours. Our Mother Daughter Retreat in Greece is five nights at Kea Retreat on Psathi Bay, June 27 to July 2, 2027. Seven pairs, my mom and me included.
The whole estate is ours for the week. A private cove, a pool, and a stone farmhouse suite for each pair. Meals are made by Michelin trained chefs. Gentle yoga every morning, a private boat day, a Greek cooking class with a local family, and a massage for each of you. Here is a full day on the retreat, hour by hour.
Best for: pairs who want real time together and nothing to plan. Applications are open now.
2. A cooking week in Tuscany or Puglia
Italy is made for long lunches. A week of cooking classes on a farm lets you stand side by side and make something with your hands. You go home with recipes you will cook together for years.
Best for: moms and daughters who bond in the kitchen.
3. Lisbon and Sintra
Lisbon is easy to love. Tiled streets, pastries on every corner, and the sea at the end of every hill. Take the train to Sintra for a day of palaces and forest gardens.
Best for: a first trip abroad together.
4. Provence in lavender season
The lavender fields of Provence bloom from about mid June into July. Base yourselves in one village and drive slowly between markets, fields and vineyards.
Best for: moms who love a market and daughters who love a photo.
5. A spa weekend close to home
A beautiful trip can be a short drive away. Two nights at a spa, side by side treatments, good food and deep sleep.
Best for: full calendars, or a first trip together before a bigger one.
6. The Amalfi Coast by boat
The most magical way to see the Amalfi Coast is from the water. A boat day takes you into quiet coves for a swim, then to a small harbor for lunch.
Best for: pairs who want the classic Italian summer.
7. A long weekend in Paris
Paris is lovely at every age. Walk along the river, sit in a café for an hour, and choose one museum to savor. Spring and early autumn are especially beautiful.
Best for: a celebration, like a birthday or a graduation.
8. A trip to where your family comes from
This one is close to my heart. My mom is 100% Greek. Her parents were born there, and we have family in Epirus and Thessaloniki. Every summer we spent in Greece shaped who I am.
A heritage trip lets your mom show you her world through her eyes. Visit the village, find the old house, share a meal with family. You will learn so much about her in one week.
Best for: any pair with roots somewhere else.
9. A hiking week in the Dolomites
The Dolomites in northern Italy have trails for every level and mountain huts that serve hot lunches with a view. The hiking season runs from about mid June to September.
Best for: active pairs who love to move together.
10. Learn something new together
Pick a skill you can both discover. A surf lesson. A pottery class. A sourdough workshop. Learning side by side brings out so much laughter.
Best for: playful pairs who love a new adventure.
How to make it happen
Pick the dates first. Choose a week, put it on both calendars, then dream about where.
Choose who plans, or let someone plan for you. On a retreat, every detail is already taken care of.
Leave room in the days. The moments you will treasure are often the unplanned ones.
Give each other a little space. An hour on your own each day makes the time together even sweeter.
