Kea, Santorini or Mykonos With Mom

Santorini, Mykonos and Kea are three of the most beautiful islands in Greece, and each one offers a completely different week. Here is how they compare for a mother daughter trip, so you can choose the island that fits you both.

I spent my summers in Greece growing up, and my mom and I now lead a mother daughter retreat on Kea.

The short answer

Choose Santorini for iconic caldera sunsets and white villages above the sea.

Choose Mykonos for beach clubs, boutiques and lively evenings.

Choose Kea for quiet coves, long meals and slow, unhurried time together.

Santorini

Santorini is the postcard. White villages sit on the edge of a volcanic caldera, and the sunsets in Oia are famous for good reason. The beaches are dramatic, with dark volcanic sand and pebbles.

Getting there: an international airport, plus ferries from Piraeus.

For a mother daughter trip: perfect for two or three nights. Book a room with a private terrace so the sunset comes to you.

Mykonos

Mykonos is full of energy. Beach clubs, music, designer boutiques and dinners that start at ten. Little Venice and the windmills are especially lovely in the early morning light.

Getting there: an international airport, plus ferries from Piraeus and Rafina.

For a mother daughter trip: wonderful if you both love a lively scene, or as a short stop on a longer trip.

Kea

Kea is the closest Cycladic island to Athens, about an hour by ferry from Lavrio. Most visitors are Greek, many of them Athenians who come for the weekend, which keeps the island calm and authentic.

You find the car free village of Ioulida, a stone lion carved into a hillside in the 6th century BC, twelve marked hiking trails and clear coves where you might be the only people swimming. Long lunches in Vourkari. A walk down from Ioulida to the bay at Otzias. Here is our island guide to Kea.

Getting there: fly into Athens, drive about 40 minutes to Lavrio, then take the ferry. Here is how to get from Athens to Kea.

For a mother daughter trip: made for it. The days are slow and easy, so the two of you simply have time.

Side by side

Pace: Santorini is for sightseeing. Mykonos is for nightlife. Kea is for slowing down.

Beaches: Santorini has volcanic sand and pebbles. Mykonos has beach clubs. Kea has quiet coves and sandy bays.

Getting there: Santorini and Mykonos have airports. Kea is a short drive and a one hour ferry from Athens.

Best for: Santorini for a dream view. Mykonos for a celebration. Kea for rest and real conversation.

Can you do both?

Yes. A lovely plan is a week somewhere quiet, then two nights in Santorini at the end. You arrive rested and ready to enjoy every sunset.

Greek island questions

Which Greek island is best for a mother daughter trip? It depends on your pace. For rest and connection, Kea is ideal. For iconic views, Santorini. For nightlife, Mykonos.

Is Kea quieter than Santorini and Mykonos? Yes. Kea is a peaceful island loved by Greeks, especially calm on weekdays.

How do you get to Kea? Fly into Athens, drive about 40 minutes to the port of Lavrio, and take the one hour ferry to Korissia.

Why we chose Kea

When my mom and I planned a retreat for mothers and daughters, we wanted an island where the days could slow down. Where you wake up to the sea, practice yoga in the shade, swim, eat well and talk for hours.

Our Mother Daughter Retreat in Greece is five nights at Kea Retreat on Psathi Bay, June 27 to July 2, 2027. The whole estate is ours for the week, with a private cove, a pool and a stone farmhouse suite for each pair. Once you reach Kea, we take care of everything. Here is a full day on the retreat, hour by hour.

There are seven pairs, my mom and me included. If Kea sounds like your island, apply here. Want first word on new dates? Join the waitlist at the bottom of this page.
