Late June is one of the most beautiful times of year in Greece. The sea is warm, the days are at their longest, and the islands are calm before the height of summer.
Here is what Greece in late June is like for weather, water and the feel of the islands, using Kea as the example. It is where my mom and I host our Mother Daughter Retreat in Greece, June 27 to July 2, 2027.
The weather in late June
Warm and dry. On Kea in June, daytime highs average about 28°C (82°F) and nights are a soft 22°C (72°F). Rain is rare, with fewer than three days of any rain in the whole month.
There are close to 15 hours of daylight, and the sun sets close to 9 in the evening around Athens. Dinner by the water in the last light is one of the gifts of this time of year.
The sea temperature
By late June, the sea around Kea averages about 23°C (73°F). Warm enough to swim every day, and fresh enough to feel wonderful in the afternoon heat.
The water in the Cyclades is famously clear. On a calm morning you can see the sand and the rocks far below you.
The wind
Summer in the Aegean has a famous north wind, the meltemi, which is usually strongest in July and August. In late June the breeze is usually light, and many days are perfectly still. On a breezy day, the sheltered side of the island is calm and lovely, and the locals always know which beach to choose.
The feel of the islands
Late June comes just before peak season, so the islands feel relaxed and easy.
Kea is especially peaceful. Most visitors are Greek, and weekends bring Athenians over on the ferry for long lunches and evening swims. Midweek, you can often have a cove all to yourself.

A late June day in Greece
Mornings are soft and cool, with glassy water. The perfect time for yoga, a walk or a swim.
Midday is warm. Greeks enjoy a long lunch and a rest, and it is a rhythm worth following.
Late afternoon brings the best light and the warmest water of the day.
Evenings are long and warm. Dinner starts late, often after 9, and lasts as long as you like.
Ferries in late June
Summer schedules are running by late June, with several sailings a day between Lavrio and Kea. Weekend boats are popular, so book ahead. Here is how to get from Athens to Kea.
